Defense Leads Wildcats Past Tigers in a Dominating 11-2 Win

Chapel Hill, NC — In a game often dominated by offensive statistics, it was the East defense that completely shut down the visiting Chapel Hill Tigers in a 11-2 win over their cross town rivals.

Led by seniors Dylan Shaw (#13, 4 takeaways, 5 groundballs), Will McEntee (#77 4 takeaways, 3 groundballs), junior Daniel Wittekind (#18, 1 takeaway, 4 groundballs), sophomore Ellis Llewellyn (#6, 1 takeaway, 4 groundballs), and freshmen goalie Vance Perkins (#7, 11 saves) the defensive unit held the Tigers to just 13 shots on goal. Also contibuting to its stellar performance were defensive midfielders senior Luke Arlotto (#1, 1 groundball), junior Collin MacClennan (#21, 3 groundballs), junior Kelly Scroggs (#33), and sophomore Adam Bussian (#8).

Both teams traded possessions early when East, now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Conference V, struck first. The Cats took an early lead when senior Baxter Perkins (#22, 3 goals) received a quick pass from junior Ian Levin (#11, 2 goals, 3 assists) as he was cutting to the goal. Perkins rattled off the next two goals unassisted, while seniors Ryan Dotson (#23, 3 goals, 1 assist), Riley Reid (#15, 2 goals, 1 assist), and junior Hartford Zirkle (#10, 1 goal) contributed to the scoring effort, enabling the Wildcats to take a 7-2 lead at the half.

The Wildcats continued it assault in the second half with four straight unanswered goals led by Dotson, Reid, and Levin. The Wildcats finished with a 23-20 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in takeaways while the Tigers won 9 of 14 faceoffs.

Levin led all scorers with five points followed by Dotson (4 points), Perkins and Reid (3 points each), and Zirkle (1 point).

The Wildcats meet the Carrboro Jaguars (1-5) for the first time this season on Tuesday, March 19th at 7pm (JV at 5pm) in Wildcat Stadium.

Wildcats Top the Falcons in a Closely Fought Contest

Durham, NC (March 1, 2013) – Senior Riley Reid registered a career-high four goals ( #15, 4 goals, 1 assist) in the Wildcats 16-14 win over the Jordan Falcons on Friday night.

The Wildcat offense struck first off a defensive takeaway by Senior Will McEntee (#77, 2 assists, 6 groundballs, and 3 takeaways) who pushed it ahead to Junior Ian Levin (#11, 3 goals, 4 assists) who spilt the defense for the first score at the 10:11 minute mark.

The Wildcats fast paced, transition-oriented offense pushed hard to open a four goal advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats’s starting defensive unit of Seniors McEntee and Dylan Shaw (#13, 7 takeaways), Junior Daniel Wittkind (#18, 5 groundballs, 4 takeways), and Sophomore Ellis Llewellyn (#6, 4 groundballs, 3 takeaways) held Jordan to just two goals in the first quarter.

While Jordan closed the gap in the secord quarter with a four goal run, the Cats kept pace with three goals of its own to lead the Falcons at half 9-6.

After the break the Cats came out shooting, extending it’s advantage 14-8 with 2:00 left in the thrid quarter. After trading goals with the Falcons, East Chapel Hill held a comfortable margin of 16-10 well into the fourth quarter when the Falcons went on a another run.

This time the Cats didn’t answer, and with just over 2:00 minutes remaining in the game Jordan scored three unanswered goals to close the gap 16-13. The Falcons scored their last goal as time expired for a final score of 16-14.

Despite Jordan’s advantage on face-offs, winning 19 of 27, East Chapel Hill defense stymied the Falcons with a 20-7 takeaway advantage; and the Cats offense outshot Jordan 33-26, and had five players with hat tricks.

Levin led the team with seven points, followed by Reid (5 points), Senior Baxter Perkins (#22, 4 pts, 3 goals, 1 assist), Junior Hartford Zirkle (#10, 4 pts, 3 goals, 1 assist), and Senior Ryan Dotson (#23, 3 pts, 3 goals).

Freshmen goalie Vance Perkins (#7) stepped up big time posting nine saves in his first start and win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return to action this Tuesday, March 5, 2013 when they visit the Cedar Ridge Redwolves in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
