Wildcats Top the Falcons in a Closely Fought Contest

Durham, NC (March 1, 2013) – Senior Riley Reid registered a career-high four goals ( #15, 4 goals, 1 assist) in the Wildcats 16-14 win over the Jordan Falcons on Friday night.

The Wildcat offense struck first off a defensive takeaway by Senior Will McEntee (#77, 2 assists, 6 groundballs, and 3 takeaways) who pushed it ahead to Junior Ian Levin (#11, 3 goals, 4 assists) who spilt the defense for the first score at the 10:11 minute mark.

The Wildcats fast paced, transition-oriented offense pushed hard to open a four goal advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats’s starting defensive unit of Seniors McEntee and Dylan Shaw (#13, 7 takeaways), Junior Daniel Wittkind (#18, 5 groundballs, 4 takeways), and Sophomore Ellis Llewellyn (#6, 4 groundballs, 3 takeaways) held Jordan to just two goals in the first quarter.

While Jordan closed the gap in the secord quarter with a four goal run, the Cats kept pace with three goals of its own to lead the Falcons at half 9-6.

After the break the Cats came out shooting, extending it’s advantage 14-8 with 2:00 left in the thrid quarter. After trading goals with the Falcons, East Chapel Hill held a comfortable margin of 16-10 well into the fourth quarter when the Falcons went on a another run.

This time the Cats didn’t answer, and with just over 2:00 minutes remaining in the game Jordan scored three unanswered goals to close the gap 16-13. The Falcons scored their last goal as time expired for a final score of 16-14.

Despite Jordan’s advantage on face-offs, winning 19 of 27, East Chapel Hill defense stymied the Falcons with a 20-7 takeaway advantage; and the Cats offense outshot Jordan 33-26, and had five players with hat tricks.

Levin led the team with seven points, followed by Reid (5 points), Senior Baxter Perkins (#22, 4 pts, 3 goals, 1 assist), Junior Hartford Zirkle (#10, 4 pts, 3 goals, 1 assist), and Senior Ryan Dotson (#23, 3 pts, 3 goals).

Freshmen goalie Vance Perkins (#7) stepped up big time posting nine saves in his first start and win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return to action this Tuesday, March 5, 2013 when they visit the Cedar Ridge Redwolves in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
